We know exactly what the morning scene looks like in your house. Kids are waking up late, no one can find clean clothes, the teenage sister is hogging the bathroom, and you just found out that your son’s science project is duu today! Mornings in a family house can seem like out of control tornadoes threatening to wreck your entire day. It’s easy, then, to press a toasted pop-tart into each of your children’s hands as they scoot out the door to catch the bus and call it breakfast. But, while this breakfast choice is easier, you may selling your child short.
Healthy Breakfast Cereal Choices
Many breakfast cereals and breakfast pastries contain high amounts of sugar which gives your child “crash and burn” energy. This sugary breakfast food will give your kid high levels of frantic energy for about two hours and will then leave him or her with almost nothing to get through the rest of the day on.
Instead of giving your child the chocolatey, sugary, fruity cereal that happens to be popular in the moment, try to find cereals for your children that are made with whole grains. Many popular cereals are making the move to whole grains which sustain young minds for longer periods of time. Now, we know that kids love sweets, but instead of choosing a cereal loaded with sugar, try to find a slightly sweet cereal and dress it up with some of these suggestions:
- Blueberries
- Strawberries
- Bananas
- Wheat Germ
- Apple Slices
- Raspberries
You can serve your kids healthy protein by making turkey bacon or turkey sausage which has all the flavor of breakfast meats without all the harmful fats. Or, try grilling lean ham or lean chicken strips and mixing them into a couple of eggs for a protein-rich omelet that your kids will love!
